OUr third Brazil team is in the city of Sao Luis on the Northeast coast of Brazil. This is the city that UW has been doing ministry in for the last 10 years! God has really used the teams in the past to help churches in the area really see the impact of sports ministry in their local communities.
The team is working alongside Mike Nichols who is a missionary there and has been a HUGE partner with our ministry in Brazil. The team is doing two camps a day this week in two areas of Sao Luis (Raposa in the morning and Cidade Operária in the afternoons). They are staying at host homes from Mike's church. The team of Janae Blea, Brent Fortenberry, Caleb Lawrence, Kellen Dick, Melinda Smith and Elise Bireline have checked in and are doing great. They landed in Sao Paulo at 8:30 pm on Saturday night and then connected to Sao Luis (a 3.5 hour flight) so they didn't land until 4am! They are all rested now and had a great "opening ceremony" for their camps this week at one of the churches that really showed the team the passion with which Brazilians do things!
They have a cool opportunity this coming weekend to travel 4 hours south into the interior and run two camps there at churches that are pastored by some of Mike's former seminary students. Please keep the team in your prayers. Unlike the other two teams in southern Brazil, the temps in Sao Luis will be very warm and humid. Stay posted for some pictures from camp very soon!
